History of the Telescope and Binoculars
Before we trace on the history of binoculars and telescopes, it is proper that we define what binocular is or the meaning of telescopes. Binoculars are optical instruments. As we all know, optical instruments provide a magnified view of objects that are at a distant location or area. A telescope is also an optical instrument that permits direct observation and photographic recording of objects that are at a distance place. A telescope can emit, transmit and reflect with visible radiation.
If we compare a telescope from that of a binocular, when it comes to viewing, of course viewing at a distance is better when both eye is used. By using a binocular, the perceived color and contrast is improved by up to 40%. It is more comfortable for a certain individual to stay much longer on a certain instrument by using both eyes compared to using a telescope with the use of an eye. A telescope makes use of a tunnel vision and a single barrel when binoculars use the stereo vision which eliminates fatigues in the eyes.
Telescope and all other optical instruments like the alignment telescope, interferometer, binoculars, autocollimator, camera testing, camera test pattern and software are extremely vital in today’s scientific field of studies. In actuality, and in contrary to the popular belief the first telescope was not invented by Galileo. The idea originally came from Hans Lippershey and after Galileo heard that the patent was refused, reinvented the “looking glass” to appear like a toy that is used to observe heavenly bodies.
The reason why Galileo was know to have created the telescope is because the device that he created was the first instrument that he used to see the craters of the moon. The renowned Italian scientist Galileo was also the first person who discovered the four large moons of the planet Jupiter. Aside from that, he was also the first person to see the sunspots and the rings of the planet Saturn. The design of Galileo’s telescope is like a pair of opera glasses.
After so many years, the concave and convex lenses were improved by many inventors like Prince Frederick Sesi of Venice, Johannes Kepler who added another prism behind the eyepiece and even Isaac Newton in 1668 was able to produce a reflective telescope with the use of tin and mirrors for greater magnification. William Herschel in 1789 who is an astronomer created a 40 feet long of a telescope. The huge telescope that he invented is being used in observatories even today.
The science of optics and optical instrument had been developed by our ancestors many years ago. The result of their brilliant minds and ideas immensely benefit us today. The science of optics is now being used and applied in many areas of study that includes metrology, oceanography, astronomy, remote sensing, fiber optics, Optics, plasma physics, seismology, particle physics, bio-molecular interactions, physics, nuclear, quantum mechanics and many more.
Therefore, the creation of the telescope and binocular has evolved into many sophisticated-high precision instruments. From the basic knowledge in optics, man was able to create different instruments that are extremely necessary in the field of science just like the camera, microscopes, autocollimator, interferometers, alignment telescope and many more scientific instruments.
